The land of clubs
More than 100,000 clubs shape social life: gymnastics clubs, football teams, music societies, Samaritan groups, parent associations. It is here that the contacts that matter in Switzerland are forged – regularly, reliably, through shared activity. Joining a club will get you better connected after three months than three years of after-work events.
How to get started
- Check your local council’s website: browse the list of clubs and arrange two taster sessions
- Take part rather than watch – even when it comes to clearing up after an event
- Parent-teacher councils and school functions are the fast track for families
- Volunteering opens doors and, as a bonus, improves your German
Integration in Switzerland is not built on small talk, but on membership.
And: patience is required. The Swiss “du” comes slowly – but once it does, it stays.
