Finding your place: Why clubs are the key
Expats often complain about feeling distant. The quickest route to genuine connections is through local clubs and societies.

In international surveys, Switzerland regularly ranks at the bottom when it comes to “making friends.” The Swiss are not unfriendly – but their friendships form in places that many newcomers do not look.
The land of clubs
More than 100,000 clubs shape social life: gymnastics clubs, football teams, music societies, Samaritan groups, parent associations. It is here that the contacts that matter in Switzerland are forged – regularly, reliably, through shared activity. Joining a club will get you better connected after three months than three years of after-work events.
How to get started
- Check your local council’s website: browse the list of clubs and arrange two taster sessions
- Take part rather than watch – even when it comes to clearing up after an event
- Parent-teacher councils and school functions are the fast track for families
- Volunteering opens doors and, as a bonus, improves your German
Integration in Switzerland is not built on small talk, but on membership.
And: patience is required. The Swiss “du” comes slowly – but once it does, it stays.
