Having your qualifications recognised: the underestimated time-drain
In the fields of health, construction and education, recognition of qualifications is key to securing employment. Start the process early.

Many immigrants underestimate a single administrative act that determines months of your career entry: the recognition of foreign qualifications.
Regulated or not?
What matters is whether your profession is regulated in Switzerland. Nursing, medicine, teaching, electrical installation or fiduciary work may only be practised with a recognised qualification – here, there is no way around formal recognition. For non-regulated professions (such as IT or marketing), the employer decides; however, a confirmation of level can help in salary negotiations.
How recognition works
- Find the responsible authority (SBFI as the first point of contact, then e.g. SRK for health professions, EDK for teachers)
- Documents: qualifications, study plans, employment references – some may need to be officially translated
- Duration: typically 2 to 6 months, longer if additional requirements are imposed
- Cost: several hundred Swiss francs, depending on the procedure
The recognition process ideally begins before you move – not after your first rejection.
Our advice: start the procedure from your home country as soon as you have decided to come to Switzerland. That way, the recognition will be in place when you need it – at your first serious job interview.
