From L to C: how the residence permit ladder works
Which ID grants which rights – and how to secure your settlement permit more quickly.

L, B, C, G – the Swiss permit system may look like alphabet soup, but it follows a clear logic of progression.
The permits at a glance
The L permit applies to short stays of up to 12 months, usually linked to a fixed-term contract. The B permit is the standard case when moving to Switzerland with a job: valid for five years for EU/EFTA citizens and renewable. The G permit is for cross-border commuters. And the C permit – the settlement permit – brings almost full equality: free choice of job and canton, no more source tax deductions, and easier property purchase.
The path to the C permit
- Regular route: after 10 years of residence
- Privileged route after five years: e.g. citizens of EU/EFTA states with corresponding agreements and those who have successfully integrated
- Early route after five years with strong integration: language proof (oral B1, written A1) and impeccable conduct
What can delay your ascent
Receiving social assistance, debt enforcement proceedings or criminal convictions can delay permit renewals and the granting of a C permit. Long absences abroad also interrupt the residency periods. Keep your file clean – it literally pays off, because with the C permit you no longer face source tax deductions and switch to ordinary taxation.
The C permit is not just a form – it’s a milestone. Plan it like a project.
